Construction in Jaisalmer of gold-buff sandstone and the city is famous for the richness of its stone and wood carvings and ornamentation on house-fronts, palaces and temples, exhibiting a plethora of floral patterns intermingled with leaves and innumerable geometric motifs. Really the defty fingers of the carvers have chiselled out the stone here as finely as walnut carvings of Kashmir. The spicy and creative precision found in the jalis bring a nuance in the drab environs of the city, the spectator enjoys the sight of geometric and floral patterns in stone.

Majestic frontage of houses generally bear an immense variety of jalis, but not exactly in the sense of perforated screens, Designs are so etched that their deep cutting create an impression of their being cut in a peephole manner, but the stone on its rear has a plain surface. Likewise, the foliated scroll designs in the stone panels are so profusely carved that the work is mistaken for stucco mouldings. The other feature in this regard is that this exuberance of ornamentation has been restricted to the frontages only; so ingenuously carved that the onlooker is dazed at the immensity and intricacy of the carvings. A very close observation gives us a knowledge that the fretted foliages and geometric patterns show that countable units and motifs have been inserted in a way as to lend an impression of an endless network of lace like filigree work.
