Jaisalmer is principally a city of winding alleys with ancient houses with ornate fronts. Ever house has its entrance-door flanked by wooden horse head from the lintel-ents. The agavada of the mol is embellished exuberant trellis-work with beli and basant, taraphul, kharlia chhayas, athas, lums etc. Jharokhas, gokhadas, baris and such other architectural features on the front make the houses bewitchingly beautiful. These dwelling houses are so nicely planned and designed that heat and dust do not disturb the living of commoners. Yellow-ochre colored local stone glitters in bright sunlight. Pathiyal and medi are comparatively coller but now very few medis are left to be seen. The fretted Jhulan-Jharokha (swinging balcony) are the fittest place to enjoy the evening breeze and to spend one’s time chatting with lovely women. In the projected balconies bed rolls are apread, to share the opium without discrimination, or even the place could be utilized for leisure and siesta.
