Jaisalmer was a peaceful city for long-time during Moughal period, whereas in other princely states like Gujarat, Malwa, Marwar and Mewar, the various rulers were attacked by the enemies. Finding Jaisalmer most peaceful, the business communities settled down in Jaisalmer and built big Masons, Havelis and Houses. They were having their trade concerns in Sindh, Gujarat, Malwa, Marwar and Mewar. They brought their riches here as well as the artists, artisans scholars and musicians. For a long peaceful time the art and craft developed and reached its horizon in 18th and 19th century AD.

Legends find expression in songs, music and bardic epics. Even today the people sing the verses of long poems to music played on indigenous instruments.

A variety of handicrafts, such as embroidered woolen, cotton and leather goods, embroidered cotton with mirror work, silver and gold ornaments and painted and carved wooden articles, attractive nomadic carpets are marketed. There are many emporium and private vendors, those who sell article of Jaisalmer and Barmer region.
