Jain Temples, Jaisalmer

Within the area of fort is an extensive group of temples erected by the rich and influential Jain community of Jaisalmer. The financiers of these Rajputs are almost exclusively of the Jain cult. Since they played such a vital role in the economic and political life of the state, the rules gave them full liberty to worship. With complimentary tolerance, Jain temples, in a remarkable gesture of syncretism, included all the deities  of the Hindu pantheon in the sculpture of gates, arches, pillars and the outer facing of their temples walls. The sanctum, sanctorium, invariably enshrines the Thirthankar (Jain Saint) to whom the temple is dedicated and the niches in the corridors right around the temple courtyard, contain a small image of one of the many tirthankar of the faith. Of the many beautiful Jain temples here the best examples are Rishabdeoji, the Sambhavnathji and the elaborate Ashthapadi-ka-mandir.

To the Rajputs temple is a place of supreme veneration and to lay down their lives in its defense and protection is a point of honor and prestige. Jain temples of western India are patterned mostly on the Solanki and Vaghela schools of temple constructions with a little variation here and there. Jain temples of Jaisalmer also are built in the same pattern. General description of the interiors and exteriors of the Jain sanctuaries with their main features elaborated here.

The exterior structure of Jain temples consists of many features. The main sikhara or spire is the top of the main temple. This main sikhara is raised upon a square base and raises high in a curvilinear fashion. The other spires adorning the different mandapas adjoining the main temple are constructed in a stepped-pyramidal and bell shaped forms. This type of balanced construction with dominating main sikhara gives a very pleasing view to the eye.
