Salim Singh Haveli, Jaisalmer

The Haveli or house with the blue cupola roof stands low, just little below the fort. The Haveli has an extraordinary construction. Narrow below, it flowers out at the second and third storeys in jutting balconies supported by numerous brackets, balcony railing. The whole is topped by the blue roof cap.

Salim Singh Motha was son of Shri Dewan Swaroop Singh. Swroop Singh was Prime Minister of Rawal Mool Raj-II. Salim Singh Motha came from a rich merchant family who had been hereditary ministers of the Rawals: the versatile rulers of Jaisalmer. They were men who held great deal of politicial power since they controlled the finance of the rulers and indeed of the state. Salim Singh’s father an imperious bold, once demanded the payment of a large loan made to a member of the royal house. In fact, he accosted the prince in the street of Pokran, while that haughty Rajput was riding past, and holding his bride on a horse back, Mohta demanded an immediate settlement of the debt. It was a rash thing to do and the outraged Rajput reacted with still greater characteristic rashness, he drew his sword and chopped of the merchant’s head and galloped away. The extravagant princes, ever in need of funds remained in debt to the Mohtas.

Salim Singh was only 12 when his father was murdered. He nursed a terrible hatred in his heart against the Rawal and planned a revenge to the members of the royal family and finally to become an active force in the destruction of Jaisalmer state. He was a soft spoken man, suave and seemingly week. By the time he became young the Rawal were so fair indebted to him that he was appointed Prime Minister of Rawal Mool Raj. Salim Singh had the entire nobility in his clutches. He got rid of those who thwarted him, through poison or the dagger. Greed, then turned him in his own community and through forced taxes and confiscations, especially for Palliwal Brahmins, he drove many rich families away. He managed to retain a few members of each household as hostage for further extortion. As far the royal family is concerned they were entirely controlled by him. Not a suit of clothes be ordered, a jewel bought or even royal horse and carriage taken out without his express orders. He planned to construct an overhead walk (bridge) from his Haveli to the royal palace above the entire city. But for this Rawal balked and Salim Singh postponed his plan. Destiny caught up with him, when some tormented victim dispatched him with dagger. The Haveli is closed now for visitors.
