Gadisar Lake, Jaisalmer

About 1 kilometer from the fort or ½ km from Salim Singh-ki-Haveli there is a famous water tank known as “Garisar” It was build by Maharawal Garsi in 1367 AD and hence locally known as Garisar.  This before water was piped to the city. A natural low-hand was dammed to catch every drop of rain water. The ladies of Jaisalmer wearing colourful costumes used to come here to fetch drinking water every morning and evening. Even the Maharawal and the royal household visited the tank on special occasions. In the middle of the Lake Maharawals constructed a small “Baradari” (special balcony), to have a boat ride during mansoon. On the banks of the tank there were several temples mainly dedicated to Lord Shiva and Vishnu.

The entrance gate of this gate is very artistic and has a very interesting story regarding its construction. It is known as Teelon-ki-pole or the gate of Teelon, the famous court dancer, elite lady and enthusiastic concubine. Teelon was a daughter of Jaisalmer and inhabiting at Sindh Hyderabad (Now in Pakistan). Being the famous court dancer by her charming expressions to the art loving Maharajas she saved quiet a lot of money. To make use of this money she constructed a gateway to the tank. All the five fingers are not same in size, hence the zealous courtesans reported about the construction to the then Maharawal that he has to cross the gateway to reach the tank which was built by a dancer. In those days the dancer were not having respectable position in the society, so it was considered shameful for the Maharawal and for the people to cross the gateway built by a dancer cum prostitute. The king consequently ordered to demolish the gate. When Teelon heard about this kind of conspiracy, she consulted the Brahmins who were very influential to the court. Only on the advise of the Brahmins she installed an icon of Satyanarain (Visnu) on the top of the gate. Having heard about it, the king had to withdraw his orders. Since then the gateway is standing and reminding us the socialistic and ritualistic mysteries of medieval rulers of India. The carving of the window, archway, is remarkable and delicate. The carving looks like it has been done on sandalwood not on yellow sandstone.
